John 3:1-2 ”Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, ‘Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.’”
Do you remember the last time you sat down and had a one-on-one conversation with someone? Did you have their undivided attention? Did they want to know more about you and what God was doing in you? Were you able to share more with them because they were focused on you and willing to listen?
In John 3, Nicodemus is sitting and listening to Jesus with an open heart. This Pharisee clearly knew the Old Testament Bible, as he wasn’t just any teacher, but a ruler and respected elder. And yet, he was curious to know more and have his beliefs challenged by the one sent from God. He wanted Jesus to blow his socks off (did they even have socks back then??) and change his perspective.
We see Jesus in this passage impart deep wisdom about the Kingdom of Heaven and how God’s way is so different from our own. Jesus explains His way is imperceivable to us without revelation from Holy Spirit which is only possible because Jesus came. This meeting with Nicodemus happened very early in Jesus’ ministry and yet we get one of the greatest truth bombs out of this meeting: “For God so loved the world that he gave his Only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Jesus didn’t reveal this truth in a sermon or a teaching to a large crowd. He revealed it in a one-on-one conversation with a man who came to him believing Jesus is who he says he is. Jesus revealed this to a man who was curious and wanted to know more.
I just laugh at John 3:3 when Jesus says “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus replies how everyone would when first hearing this crazy statement: “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Nicodemus understood about a physical birth, while Jesus was revealing a spiritual rebirth. This is how Jesus shifts our perspective if we let him.
I am so proud of you all for putting distractions aside and setting time in these 21 days of dedication to listen to what Jesus is saying. I urge you to have curiosity about how God wants to change your perception, challenge your beliefs, and reveal the Kingdom of Heaven to you and through you. Blessings!
